Ms W's Python game Unit 13

Yes, I do have a go, myself!!

Here is an image of the flow chart I drew out before I started programming.  It's vital you do this to make sure you remember the choices in your game, the results of each choice and where they take the player

Here is the link to my Codeacademy Python game......

Modelling - Lesson 5 - Assessment

Modelling - Lesson 5 - Assessment!
What you need to do

1.  Go to Learning Computing - Lesson 5 - Assessment.

2.  Click on the link to the assessment task presentation.

3.  Work through each Task in turn.  Task 1 (Level 4) written work should be written directly on to your new Blog post for this lesson.

4.  For Tasks 2 - 4 involve creating a spreadsheet (Google Sheet) to set out the data given on slide 3 and to add formulas and formatting to it.

Hint: Remember to format cells for currency (use Format menu) where appropriate and you'll also find conditional formatting in there for Task 3.

Minimum values can be found using =min(highlight cells in the range you are using to find this out) and then Enter.

5.  Task 5 answers should be written underneath your table on your spreadsheet.  Think about the variables you could change on your Lemonade simulation and how those ideas could apply to this scenario.

6.  Check out the mark scheme on the last slide and compare your work to this to make sure you can get the best marks possible.

7.  Share your spreadsheet correctly and copy/paste the link to your Blog post under your written work for Task 4.

8.  Click Publish!
If you do not finish this lesson, please finish it at the weekend, ready for me to mark on Monday!  Thank you

Unit 9 'Creating an app' - Lesson 1

Your tasks this lesson!

There is a homework task for this unit. It's on the first screen when you click on Unit 9 (under the list of all the lessons).
Write it down in your planner - it's due 20th March.  it will take a while to do some research before writing it up on a blog post titled 'Homework' or attaching a correctly shared Google doc or presentation.

For this unit you will either be using a tablet provided or you can use your phone if it is an Android phone and has internet connection.

You will need to organise yourselves into groups of 5 or 6 (or less) depending on the number of people using their own phones.  You will need to use a PC or Chrome book to refer to and another one to write the app on, plus a tablet to upload it to at the end.

1.  Go to Unit 9 'Creating an app' - Lesson 2.

2.  Read through the teacher's presentation.

3.  Do what it says on slide 9 - go to Activity sheet 1.

4a.  Activity sheet 1 - On your computer or Chrome book, go to the link on slide 2 and click the orange Create button.  (You shouldn't need to follow instructions 3 and 4 to get to the screen shown).

4b.  On another Chrome book or PC in the group, go to slide 3 and watch the video.  Copy the steps in the video on the Chrome book or PC that has the app open on it.

5.  When you're done, get a help sheet for emailing from the box the tablets came in and follow the instructions on it - the email address for the tablet is on a sticker on the tablet cover.
If you have the pink tablet, you need the help sheet for scanning the QR code as the scanner for that works on that tablet (but not the others)

6.  If you have time, write a description of today's lesson on a new Blog post.

7.  Please return the tablets back to Mr Surrall's office at the end of the lesson - thank you

Unit 11 - Networking Lesson 4

Lesson 4 - work that needs to be done!

In lesson 3 we learned about how files are broken down into packets when it is sent over a network.

There are 2 ways of sending the packets - circuit switching and packet switching.

In order for computers to be able to send and receive information (data) on a network, they need to have an IP address.

1.  Find out what IP stands for, what an IP address is and why it is needed.  The link below may be useful (however, other websites are available!).

http://www.myipnumber.com/my-ip-address.asp

2.  On a new Blog post for this lesson, write down what you have found out about IP addresses and why they are needed for computers on a network or using the internet.

3.  Find out the equipment that is needed to set up a basic network of 5 computers that can connect to the internet.  List the equipment and how it is used (what it's needed for) on your Blog post.

4.  Linked in with IP addresses and networks, can you go back to the presentation for Lesson 1 in this unit when you had to explain why setting computers up as a network was a good idea for businesses.  Make sure that you have finished this presentation and that you have included diagrams for each type of network design (topology) - bus, ring and star.  Make sure you have written down the advantages and disadvantages of each design and why one you'd recommend to use.

5.  Make sure you have shared and linked this presentation correctly and that the Blog post it is pasted on to has been published.

I am checking through your work for report writing so please make sure all blog posts are published so I can write a good report!

Make sure all work for this lesson and previous ones is finished and published.  Any unfinished work is to be finished for homework

Unit 11 Networking - lesson 3

Lesson 3 - your tasks!

Once you have gone through the teacher's presentation and watched the video, you need to do the following things:

1.  Have a go at the quiz.  You need to score at least 4/6!

2.  Open up a new Blog post and title it the same as this post.

3.  Write a description of how information is sent around a network as packets.

4.  Explain the differences between circuit switching and packet switching.

5.  If you wanted to hack into a network to steal information, which type of switching (circuit or packet) would be the hardest for you to steal useful information?  Explain why.

6.  When you have finished this, click Publish!

If you don't finish this in the lesson, please finish it for homework

Tuesday 13 January 2015

Unit 11 - Networking, Lesson 2

Lesson 2 - Today's tasks!

1.  Go to Learning Computing, Unit 11 Networking, lesson 2.

2.  Open the teacher's presentation and read through each slide.  Go through the slides in overview format, don't click the 'Present' button as you need to read the notes on slides 8 and 9 for extra info (normally I'd tell you this info as I went through the presentation in class).

3.  Ignore the 2 video links on the lesson as these are no longer available on YouTube.

Instead, click on the link below to go to BBC GCSE Bitesize for a page on more information......

http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/guides/zh4whyc/revision/7

4.  Go back to Learning Computing lesson 2 page, click on Activity 2 and work through the tasks listed.

5.  Share all your work (click Share button, then Advanced and choose Anyone at Cooper School, click Done and then copy the blue highlighted weblink and paste to your blog post for this lesson.  Remember to title your new blog post for the lesson as Unit 11, lesson 2.

6.  Publish your blog post!

Unit 11 Networking - lesson 1

Welcome back!

We're starting a new unit - Unit 11, Networking

Tasks for this lesson!

1.  Go to Learning Computing, Year 8, Unit 11 Networking, lesson 1

2.  Read through the teacher's presentation so you can see what the lesson is all about.

3.  Watch the video.  If you don't have headphones, click on 'Subtitles off' at the top of the video screen and it'll switch them on so you can read the dialogue.  Try to remember the information

4.  Click on Activity 1 and do the tasks listed on it.  You'll find some of the info in the teacher's presentation and the rest in the video (that's why I said to try and remember it!).  Note - when it asks for the different types of networks, I take that to mean LAN and WAN.

5.  For extra marks and to show greater understanding, it would be good to explain the 3 different network layouts and which would be best for the business.

6.  Share your presentation correctly (click Share, then Advanced and choose Anyone with the link, then Done.  Copy the blue highlighted web link and paste to a new Blog post).

7.  Make a new Blog post on your Computing Blog and paste the shared presentation on to it.  Call your Blog post networking lesson 1.

8.  Publish your post!

If you don't finish your presentation in the lesson still share it and paste the link to your Blog and then finish it for homework.
You do not have to re-share the presentation, the link is a 'live' link so I will see any changes/updates to the presentation when I come to mark it at the end of the course.
